These bikes are in a huge distribution warehouse in Texas. Last week I saw a woman in our neighborhood riding uphill toting her groceries in one of these. She was older. The weather was cold and drizzly. It was an uphill battle for many reasons. The closer she got to the top, the more she had to walk. What also wasn’t helping her progress was the width of her the bike was wider than the width of the sidewalk. The road was busy, so I completely understand her decision to stay off of the road. I was frustrated for her.

Last week I had a conversation with a contractor about bike riding. He does not think that bikes should be in the road because cyclists can make stupid decisions. Drivers make dumb decisions too, so that argument is weak. For someone who doesn’t like riding a bike, it’s easy to just say, all bikes off of the road! But where are we going to ride when the sidewalks are too narrow? Plus, riding on the sidewalk can be just as dangerous on busy roads if there are a lot of driveways to cross. Cars aren’t looking for bikes on sidewalks. Often times, bike riders aren’t watching out for cars either. It’s negative, I know, but I don’t see a solution coming to my area in North Texas. So this debate is kind of old, really. Cars win over bikes, especially when there are few cyclists who want to ride around the neighborhood.
