Staying calm with selfish neighbors

January 15, 2012 in Random Pedaling

There seems to be a correlation between exercise and sleep. The more I exercise, the less I sleep. Lately I’ve been sleeping a lot more, which means I’ve skipped a few planned workouts.

Since I was sleeping at 3:30 this morning, I was jarred awake by a honking Suburban. I am working on not getting angry at stupid people in situations outside of my control. Not that I’m an angry person, but if you wake me up because you are doing something stupid, I will let you know that you need to be quiet immediately. This morning I couldn’t spot the person honking. One, because I couldn’t find my glasses. And two, I realized later that they were around the building. By the time I walked over there (calmly I will add – pretty proud about that) a white Suburban was pulling away. Possibly not a correlation, but it’s a strong possibility.

White Suburban, I will look for your owner and ask if they saw who was honking a car horn at 3:30 a.m.

I bring this up because I’ve been going to yoga lately. The breathing techniques are awesome. I’ve gone to yoga before, but until attending this studio, never understood that the point of yoga isn’t to be flexible and look awesome. Instead, the point of yoga is controlling the breath to calm the mind – pranayama. This morning before I walked down to the parking lot I paid attention to my breath, which I was holding. My stomach was tense. I was also hunched over. All causing me stress long after the noise had stopped. I relaxed my stomach, inhaled, and straightened up. Instantly calm. Just freaking amazing.

I won’t go so far as to thank my neighbor for giving me this opportunity to prove that I can calm myself pretty soon after ridiculousness happens. But I am happy to see that I’m focused on my goal to react less to things I can’t control (such as stupid people)even when half asleep. Go me.

Since I have hours of free time this morning, I thought about this poster. I’m sure you’ve seen it. Well the history of it is interesting. I did not know it had a royal root. Click here to learn more:

Breakfast Wrap

January 8, 2012 in Random Pedaling, Recipes

This morning I altered a recipe for a breakfast wrap from Ellie Krieger’s book, “So Easy.”  My breakfast was oh, so good.  Here’s how you make it:

1 spicy tortilla (or regular if that’s what you’ve got)
1.5 boiled eggs, remove all but 1/2 of one yolk
1/2 packet of Wholly guacamole
1/2 ounce feta
8 slices of cucumber
Ms. Dash Onion and Herb seasoning.

Microwave and eat. Yummy. Mine clocked in at 237 cals.

My First 5K

January 8, 2012 in Random Pedaling

I’ll admit it.  I didn’t want to go  to my first 5K yesterday morning.  The day before my heel was hurting.  I was extremely tired when I awoke, which isn’t normal, but this feeling might have been due to the 1000 people who were going to be in attendance.  It’s was also only a 3 mile run.  Three miles is what I run for my training plan on a regular basis.  Paying to run 3 miles with a ton of people didn’t sound appealing.

You know what else wasn’t appealing?  Being a quitter.  Thankfully the other part of me kept telling the quitter to suck it up and go.  Yes, it was only three miles.  However, I’ve been training to run the entire three miles without walking.  I’ve rushed to fit in a run when there was barely enough time.  I’ve run through traffic, waited at too many red lights, and put up with cold mornings to pay to run three miles with strangers.  Plus, if I quit I’d feel like crap the rest of the weekend and probably not follow through with the 10K in February.

Waiting in the car to stay warm before race start.

We arrived at the race an hour early so we could park and check-in.  Dave was super supportive.  He asked the dumb questions for me, like, is there a racer’s meeting?  We mountain bike.  There’s always a racers meeting at MTB races.  Apparently not at running events because the race director looked at us funny.  But because Dave asked the “dumb” question I new exactly which way to go and which way to face at the start line.  While we were told it would be obvious, it wasn’t.  5K’s went one direction while everyone else faced the opposite direction.  A lot of people didn’t know which way to face, or start, so I helped anyone who asked me.

It’s in my nature to want to help everyone.  I am my mother’s daughter.  But I’m dating Dave who only helps when asked directly most of the time.  Striking a balance is best.  You help those who clearly need assistance, but don’t get so involved that you end up losing your own experience.  So I stood by and watched the confusion, figuring the people in charge would get it sorted out.  And they did.  Yay, them.

Then the gun went off.  I just focused on my pace and my run.  I was there to finish  under 12 minutes per mile, without walking, which I did.   I ended up running my best time lately – 11.09 minutes per mile, which puts me  back on track to the 10 mile per hour pace I ran last year.

It felt great to achieve my goal.  If I hadn’t paid for a 5K I probably would have kept walking occasionally during my three mile training runs.  Now I know I can go the entire distance at a faster pace with no stops.

Thanks to Dave for supporting me as usual, and for taking photos.  Most of his photos will not be posted though.  Turns out I look like the Creature from the Black Lagoon when I run.

Uncomplicating Goals

Yesterday I received a compliment from my hairdresser that took me a little by surprise.  She said that I am not afraid to jump into new things, and that I always follow through, even if I don’t know what’s going to happen.  WOW!  That is an awesome description, and I am going to work on owning it.

She is correct in stating that I try new things, but following through is complicated. There’s a lot of self doubt, hard work, back-sliding, quitting my goal only to take the goal back up again.  The only part she sees in the before and after.  I sit down in her chair and we talk about what’s coming up.  The next time I am in I tell her how it went.

I think it should be that simple in my mind, too.  Set a goal, stick with it, deal with the fact that it’s going to be a lot of work, and follow through.  Piece of cake.  Sounds so simple.  Maybe if I didn’t make the process so complicated I’d enjoy it more.

Thanks to my hairdresser for covering up my roots and uncovering a new thought process!

Today’s Motivation

I only have time for a quick motivational post this morning to start my day focusing on what’s important.  Why,  you might ask, am I so strapped for time?  Because I slept until 5 a.m.!  This is a feat to be celebrated.  My body has been waking me up at 4:00, 3:30, 3:00, and on one odd occasion, 2:30.  It’s great for blogging and having fun on my website, but I really have missed the sleep.

This morning I feel fantastic and attribute the energy to my new yoga addiction.  After my Groupon runs out I’m sucking it up and paying for the unlimited month pass.  It’s expensive, but I feel amazing and want this to continue.

Today there is a two mile run or cross training listed on my half marathon training plan.  Since I get to say bye-bye to the grey today at the salon, I’m going to do a 30 minute NTC (Nike Training Club) when I get home from work.

Here’s to an empowering day.

My goals today:
Think of one positive thing for each negative though I have toward someone.
Drink hot tea instead of Starbucks.
Drink half my body weight in water (which is 5lbs less today!)
Do one 30 min Nike Training Club

What are your goals today?

Starting off the year with a run

January 3, 2012 in Random Pedaling

This morning I started wondering why I’ve gotten into running lately.  I think it’s because I can run out my front door.  During the week I can’t do that on my bike.  Running is just easy to get ready for, too.  I don’t have to pack my gear and bike, and then drive to the trail.

I signed up for a half marathon that takes place in March of this year.  My long run last week landed on New Year’s Day.  It was just four miles, but that’s long for me.  Up until last year I couldn’t even run a mile.  In fact I don’t think I had run a mile since middle school.

The timing was perfect.  I was starting off 2012 doing something that I never thought I would be doing, which is training for a half marathon.  It felt like I was the only person up.  No cars were on the roads.  No rider or runners were at the trail.  It was a little creepy.  This is a very busy trail!  But it was also soothing.  I had the place to myself on the first day of the  year.

I watched the sun pop up over the trees.

Was happy that no one was around when I took a picture of myself holding my resolution sign for the Run to the Finish Fun Run (thanks Amanda!)

And felt extremely accomplished when it was all over with.

I trail ran four miles in 58 minutes. An empowering start to 2012.

New Year’s Eve Ride

January 2, 2012 in Random Pedaling

Riding my mountain bike in 75 degree temperatures with blue sky and a little greenery was the perfect send off for 2011.  The weather calmed bikers, joggers and families strolling – everyone got along, yielded when appropriate and smiled.

The number of photos I take directly correlates with how jazzed I am about running and riding.  Yesterday I stopped to take one photo.  It was a good day to ride. Parts of the trail are so green right now.  Not a dull Texas fall green, but a vibrant green that puts a smile on my face.

I rode the less technical side of the trail.  Performed masterfully in front of walkers or riders who had stopped to rest, which is very important when strangers are watching.  I even heard a young woman say, “awesome” when I made it up a climb.  You make the climb based on momentum, not leg power, but to her I was skilled.  I’ll take the kudos anyway.

The fun ride of New Year’s Eve made up for the two technical rides from earlier in the week.  Lots of photos were taken, but most of them are ugly or don’t portray the difficulty of the trail.

The lines changed, so I made this climb. It's been a long time since I've made it. The lose rocks, which aren't visible in the photo, somtimes freak me out. If I didn't look at them I wouldn't have the problem!

Room to pick up some speed paired with smooth terrain equals an effortless shoot up the side.  Loose rocks on the other hand are hard to ride over, especially when you’ve been off your bike for a while.

I can come down this section, but going back up hasn't happened yet.

Trash found on the trail while gasping up a climb.

My legs are happy and tired today.  My bike is tired too.  Both shocks are leaking, and my rear shock just released all of its oil.  It needs a rest before we start riding more in the new year.

In 2012 I will ride more.  I hope to visit a trail out of state.  Most importantly, I want to have a lot of fun riding, pepper in more running, and take fewer photos along the way.

Nice to meet you, Pranayama

Yoga class was energizing yesterday morning.  During the first fifteen minutes I felt my body wake up during the breathing exercises.  It was a good thing too.  I have been waking up earlier and earlier over the past week in half hour increments.  Thursday it was 3:30, Friday it was 3:00, Yesterday I awoke at 2:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep.  You can get a lot done when you get up so early, but I’d rather have been sleeping.

I was a little dehydrated and sleepy, so I was grumpy at the start of the fundamentals class.  I am not a fan of  a lot of talking during workout classes.  Not instruction, I dig instruction in yoga, but repeated information when I’m not moving.  It’s okay when attending a workshop, but in an hour long class I want to get to moving.  I learned that this yoga class always starts with a question and answer session.  I was tired.  I wanted to move, not sit and talk.

While working on calming my mind and not wanting to look impatient,  a thought popped in my head that usually does when I am practicing yoga, don’t let this annoy you. It might be what you need.  That thought was right.  I decided to stop being frustrated and just listen to the teacher lest my aggravation register on my face – which is never my intention, but happens a lot anyway.

She talked to us about the importance of breathing.  She went into detail about pranayama, allowing the breath to control the body’s thoughts instead of thoughts controlling the breath.  DING, hello there.  This is what I am already working.

The mind body connection is something I experienced while overworking at a job.  Shallow breathing made me more stressed.  Poor posture put me in a horrible mood.  I noticed if I fixed both I felt a heck of a lot better.  Now checking my breath and posture is the first thing I do when I’m not feeling well.

Pranayama, nice to meet you by your name.  I’m not a newb when it comes to yoga, but I’m nowhere near being a yogi.  This was the first time I’d heard breathing explained in this way, or maybe this is the first time I have listened.  So happy to have gone to  yoga class.  Even happier to have told my mind to shut up.

Earlier in the week Fate decided to gift me with a Groupon for this very yoga studio.  After my free two weeks are up I start a 20 class pass for just $30.  Here’s to starting the year off with good posture and a positive outlook.

HBBC Wrap Up Week 6

December 31, 2011 in Random Pedaling

The Holiday Bootie Buster challenge is almost over. I started out so strong the first two weeks, fizzled the next two, and returned for the last two posting decent numbers:
24 DEC: 13 mile bike ride (4)
25 DEC: 3 mile run (3)
26 DEC: off
27 DEC: 9 mile MTB ride (3), 3 mile run (3)
28 DEC: Off
29 DEC: 3 mile run (3), 1 hour yoga (3), F&V (1)
30 DEC: 9 mile MTB ride (3)

Total: 23

My success this week was running my fastest time on 29 DEC. I didn’t want to run at all after work that day.  Nor did I feel like joining the yoga class I’d written on my calendar. With Dave’s help I made it out the door and completed both.

HBBC has been a huge motivator to get me back to exercising regularly.  While I haven’t lost weight, I haven’t gained any either.  More importantly, I’m in better shape.  HBBC ends next week, but a new challenge begins:  the food journal challenge.

Click the picture to visit Amanda's blog at www.runtothefinish.com and join in the challenge.

This is perfect because earlier this month I started writing down my food again in small versions of my favorite journal.

Small versions of my favorite journals by Jill Bliss. Click to visit her site.

They have a great feel to them; the paper is thick.   I have filled three of the larger versions and had to stop myself from picking up another.
