You Pedal: TX –> CA (Part 2 of 2)

November 9, 2010 in You Pedal

Dave wearing his Marine Corps jersey on his touring bike. We took this photo in Ft. Worth, TX.

Recently you met Dave Hill.  He told us about the genesis of his tour from Texas to California, and shared stories of visiting road angels.  This is part 2 of his interview.  He shares more stories from his tour and offers tips on planning your own.

Another gorgeous photo from his tour..."Looking toward Boreas Peak (IIRC)"

I asked Dave to share a scary situation from his trip.  He’d mentioned in a previous conversation that after the broken pedal incident (refer back to the first post if you missed the story), he stopped posting sticky situations on his blog.  His friends and family aren’t all avid cyclists.  When he’d run into a problem, like the broken pedal incident, a lot of people in his life couldn’t gauge the danger.  They read about the problem and assume the worst.  Instead of adding to their concerns, he chose to save some of the story telling for when he arrived back home.

We pick up with Dave in Colorado.

Photo from the trip..."In the basin, headed toward Hartsel."

GORE CANYON
I left Kremmling, Colorado at about noon; the weather really took a turn.  The cold wind started gusting at 25, 30 miles an hour, right in my face.  I started climbing and just had…I just had some uncomfortable moments.

"Out of Kremmling, CO, looking toward where I'll camp tonight."

There were a couple of straight five mile inclines, 10% grade climbs, where I couldn’t even see the top.  I just had to keep my head down; I just kept pedaling and pedaling. I got over a couple of those and every time I’d come around a pass the wind would seem to be harder in that direction.  It was strenuous. Long climbs come with a built-in excuse for stopping, You have to take photos, right?

Beautiful view from the look out where Dave spoke with the Harley rider.

Sweet, Bike Craftiness

October 16, 2010 in Random Pedaling

During my hunt for cupcake accessories at Michael’s Arts and Crafts supply I uncovered bike themed craft accessories for you scrapbookers out there.  I love craft supplies even though I rarely have the follow through to complete craft projects, large or small.

I love this paper and bought a few sheets of the top two designs.  It’s nice and thick so I clipped out small bike shapes to put atop the three cupcakes I didn’t throw in the trash immediately following my sweets and treats shoot.

Antique Bike Swap Next Saturday in Hurst

October 11, 2010 in Random Pedaling

Earlier this year Dave and I visited a bike swap hosted by a bike shop in Carrollton.

The guys in this photo told me that their group would have a larger swap in October.  I found this flyer online which says it’s next Saturday in Hurst.  Based on the smaller swap we attended, they’ll have great looking antique bikes, rat rods, and classics.

I ride for cupcake consumption.

I got caught eating cupcakes. Well it was one cupcake. Monday I have a shoot. We’re using my kitchen, so I have lots of sugar, cupcakes and cookies in my apartment kitchen.

Unfortunately I like sugar. But I’ve been a trooper all day. I was a trooper when I got home.

Store bought cupcakes. The icing didn't travel well.

But then the icing on two of the non-Fall colored cupcakes slid off. Monday’s shoot focuses on Fall sweets. Pink isn’t a Fall color, but red is, so I opened the box to see if I could do some repair work. The red peeled off the cupcake once the lid was open. So there it was. An ugly cupcake. I was alone. Some of the icing was already on my hand. So I ate it! And it was good. Not the best cupcake, but it’s been awhile since I’ve eaten one. Well, two. There was another fatality when the lid was opened.

I’m not sure what happened, or how it happened, but the cupcake went in my mouth at the same moment my boyfriend came home. I tried to hide the evidence, but I’m very bad at hiding things. It wouldn’t have been so bad if he’d not already told me to make sure and ride my bike because he was bringing me home a surprise.

The picturesque cupcakes Dave brought home.

He arrived home early! My guilty pink stained grin kind of stole his thunder.

Mark Twain likes my bike.

September 27, 2010 in Random Pedaling

Sunday started off drizzly and overcast.  It was a perfect morning to grab the new cross bike and go.  This was the first time I’ve ridden the Trinity River bike trails.  I had a fun ride and ran into an old friend.

Mark Twain admiring my Kuota.

Saturday it rained all day and soaked the mountain bike trails.  Puddles speckled the pavement of the Trinity trail, but I had no issues with water, mud, or wet gravel.  I even managed to successfully bunny hop over buckled pavement and other bumpy items in my way.

The graffiti's camera shy.

This is my third ride on my new bike.  The more I ride it, the more I like it.  My cyclocross bike is fun.

This bike painting is part of three art pieces under an overpass along the trail. The writing on the wall indicates that artists can ask permission to paint. Anyone want to redo this bike? It could use a makeover.

You Pedal: A family of four on two bikes travels cross continent to change their world.

June 15, 2010 in You Pedal

Imagine that you love to ride a bicycle.   I am guessing this is not difficult since you’ve landed on my website.  Now, picture your partner, best friend, someone you really like, joining you for a long bike ride.  A significantly long tour that covers 20,000 km (for the Americans in the audience, that’s around 12,500 miles).  You’ll meet people and see things you couldn’t have imagined.  The trip will be tiresome, thrilling, and challenging with adventure awaiting you at each bend in the road.  This journey will change your life. Keep that same traveling image in your mind, but this time add a 7-month-old and a 3-year-old to your trip.

Most people would put the bicycles down at the thought of traveling with two children, but not Reuben and Heidi. This inspiring couple is taking a year to travel with the whole family in tow. I learned about the Pedal Powered Family in the same place I find a lot of my stories:  online.  It took only one sentence of back story before I was brimming with questions about their undertaking.  Between raising the kids, working, and planning this trip, Reuben and Heidi found the time to talk to me.

Do you remember your first ride?

May 27, 2010 in Random Pedaling

Yesterday we stopped by the LBS (local bike shop) to pick up some Heed.  Texas temperatures are rising.  I don’t want to bonk, so I drink a bottle of the stuff as an insurance plan when on the trails.  While Dave looked at CO2 cartridges and sports drinks, I looked around for a bike.  Not a bike to photograph. I’m searching for an affordable bike to take on errands.  Errands that I currently won’t do on my mountain bike out of fear that a part of the bike, if not the entire thing, will be stolen.

I noticed this bicycle hanging from the ceiling after ogling a bike that was way out of my price range. One note reads “Not for Sale.”  The other, “Do you remember your first ride?”

I barely remember my first two-wheeled ride.  I definitely remember my second.

Bike Photo Friday! Bike Signs

May 14, 2010 in Bike Photo Friday!

This week I am running short on bicycle photos.  Finding mountain bikes on the trail is easy.  Spotting unique bikes everyday?  Not so much.  Yesterday I ventured out with my camera during an errand run to Southlake, TX.  I figured that since it was a beautiful day someone would have ridden a bike to the shopping center.
